  • The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is seeking a Program Manager, School & Teacher Programs for our Education & Programs department. The Program Manager, School & Teacher Programs works closely with the Manager of School & Teacher Programs at the Natural History Museum. It is an exciting time as we embark on new journeys of becoming a museum of, for, and with L.A.also work collaboratively with public facing departments to create engaging and mission-driven content beyond an exhibition.

    The Assistant Curator may write texts for catalogues and other online formats and advise and participate in interpretive initiatives at the Museum. They may also manage a Research Assistant on project-related duties and, as approved by senior management, may also present content about the Museum elsewhere and function as a representative of the Museum.

  • The MER Board of Directors provide leadership and oversight to the Museum Education Roundtable and the Journal of Museum Education through sound, ethical, financial, and legal governance policies. There are opportunities for Board members to exercise and build skills, knowledge, and abilities that enhance or extend beyond the scope of members’ work at their organizations. The Board is intentional in creating a work environment rooted in collaboration, shared leadership, and reflexive practice.

    MER Board members attend one retreat (in-person and/or virtual), quarterly virtual board meetings, and monthly action team meetings. In addition to these scheduled meetings, board members are expected to do individual work to prepare for meetings, and reach goals and deadlines that amount to about 1-4 hours per week. Board members serve on one of three action teams: Editorial, which develops themes along with the JME Co-Editors and reviews guest edited proposals for the Journal of Museum Education; Communications, which grows and engages the JME readership and MER membership by leveraging JME content through social media, emails, and the Museum Visions blog; and Sustainability, which stewards MER’s long-term financial sustainability and organizational health.

    Some board members also serve in officer roles (i.e., President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Secretary) or as team co-chairs (Editorial, Communications, and Sustainability). All MER board members perform necessary work to produce and promote the JME and to advance MER’s goals. Board members have many opportunities to work on and/or create tasks that are meaningful to them. Tasks can range from taking notes, writing/editing/peer reviewing, strategic planning, program development, etc.

  • Under the supervision of senior management, the Assistant Curator is responsible for working independently on all aspects of smaller scale exhibitions as well as collaborating with film artists and guest curators. They may also assist senior curators on larger scale exhibition projects. This position develops all aspects of content, and collaborates closely with creative, design, registration, conservation, planning, and publication departments on the execution of an exhibition. They will also work collaboratively with public facing departments to create engaging and mission-driven content beyond an exhibition.

  • The Education Coordinator’s primary responsibility is to assist the Vice President of Programs in the planning, coordination, implementation and evaluation of artist-led School and Field Trip programs.

    The ideal candidate has the following skills:

    Strong organization is critical to this position. The employee must be attentive to detail and accuracy, be able to be proactive and plan ahead, be able to multitask and prioritize to meet multiple competing deadlines, work well under pressure in a fast paced environment, and be able to work both collaboratively and independently.

    Strong verbal, phone and written communication skills are vital in all aspects of this position and be able to present information in a poised manner and be able to interact effectively with a wide variety of colleagues on and off site.

    A positive attitude with the ability to interact with various personality traits and maintain a professional demeanor, flexibility and able to work well under pressure.

    Maturity and problem solving skills. The employee is able to make judgments between the activities that are priorities and attend to those first.

    Advanced computer skills are required including virtual meeting applications (i.e. Zoom), scheduling applications, and complete fluency in Google Suite is a must.

    Knowledge of current museum and art education practices, curriculum development, and art integration strategies.

    2-3 years working experience in a K-12 classroom setting as a classroom assistant or enrichment instructor capacity; formal teaching experience a plus.

    Demonstrated experience in visual arts as a practitioner, student and/or teacher.

    Familiarity with the San Gabriel Valley arts education landscape is a plus but not required.

    Educational degree: BA or MA with focus on education, visual arts, or nonprofit management.

    The physical ability to speak, hear, see, reach, bend, twist, type, sit, stand, lift 25 pounds, and climb a short ladder.

  • Plans, develops, and implements art education and public programming such as lectures, artist talks, symposia, performances, exhibition-related events, and art educational workshops with appropriate curriculum for diverse age groups and populations.

    Publicizes, promotes, and markets Museum educational and engagement programs and events using a variety of media including radio, television, newspapers, magazines, social media networks, podcasts, email, and Web pages.

    Organizes community meetings for the purpose of promoting Museum programs and developing and maintaining relationships with leaders, artists, and organizations within targeted communities.

    Develops informational/interpretive/educational materials designed to enhance visitor understanding and engagement.

    Identifies and invites speakers such as artists, art historians, and curators to present at the museum’s public programs.

    Personally leads and/or participates in gallery talks, exhibition lectures, visitor tours, classes, workshops and related events and activities.

    Coordinates docent-led tours; develops and maintains tour schedules, and serves as a point of contact for large groups.

    Acts as a spokesperson for the Museum’s educational programs, including presenting at conferences, participating in panels, and speaking with representatives from the media.

    Fosters educational initiatives and curricular partnerships that complement and support the Museum’s mission.

    Identifies assessment tools and collects data to measure and evaluate program effectiveness; maintains statistics on program participation.

    Recruits, screens, trains, and oversees the work of students and volunteers working within the education and community engagement programs of the Museum.

    Participates in researching funding opportunities, writing grants, preparing grant reports, and related efforts to underwrite education programs.

    Composes a variety of written materials including exhibition copy, magazine and print copy, curricula, web postings, lecture scripts, tour scripts, reports, and correspondence.

    Develops and monitors budgets for educational programs.

    Performs related duties as assigned.
